Trigeminal surgery

Here we can see how the trigeminal nerve appears under the microscope. You can also see two blood vessels compressing the nerve both from front and behind. This cross-compression by the blood vessels causes Trigeminal neuralgia. The aim of the Micro Vascular Decompression surgery is to remove the compression on the nerve caused by the blood vessels (decompression). This removal of compression or decompression is done with the help of a teflon sponge inserted between the nerve and the blood vessel. This is done microscopically (micro) to keep the vessel (vascular) away from the nerve (decompression).
