Endoscopic Stitchless Spine Disc Surgery

Endoscopic discectomy is a treatment for a slipped disc that is causing compression on a nerve root of the spinal cord like Sciatica or any other radiculopathy. Dr Jaydev Panchawagh explains why a herniated disc or slipped disc can cause compression on the spinal cord or a nerve root. Generally, the surgery is done under local anaesthesia. Occasionally, General anaesthesia may also be considered.  A very small endoscope is passed into the space that has the slipped disc and the portion of the disc that has herniated or slipped is removed. The patient can walk nearly immediately after the operation, if it is done under local anaesthesia.

Who is a good candidate for Endoscopic Discectomy?

This is a decision based on the MRI, symptoms and needs of the patient. Since this procedure removes only the extruded or slipped disc, there is a chance of recurrence of symptoms. Hence a decision to perform this surgery has to be very carefully considered and is not the option in all patients with slipped disc.
